Fecal Microbial Transplant (FMT)

The gut (GI tract) is the root of the body’s health. This is where the body’s immune system develops and where it often will show abnormalities even if disease is elsewhere in the body. Getting a look at your pet's gut microbiome can give insight to not only GI disturbances but also skin issues, anxiety, organ and endocrine disease, and more.

How Does it Work?

There are beneficial and harmful microorganisms in the intestinal tract that help the body function normally. However, many modern animals (and humans!) have an imbalanced gut. This can be due to:

  • Overgrowth of beneficial bacteria

  • Lack of or absence of beneficial bacteria

  • Overgrowth of harmful bacteria

We will assess your cat’s microbiome via a stool sample sent to a lab which gives us a direct report of the population present in your cat’s gut. Based on this, we will know what our goal of treating is as well as if any diet changes are needed or additional supplements are indicated.

What can FMT help?

Chronic GI Issues (IBD including chronic diarrhea or vomiting, lack of ability to loose weight, chronic pancreatitis)

Systemic Inflammation

  • Imbalances in the gut have been directly shown as a link to aggression and anxiety due to systemic inflammation leading to subtle levels of inflammation in the brain

  • Individuals more prone to frequent infections anywhere in the body may be due to a weakened or “over-stressed” immune system due to a poor gut biome

Allergies and frequent skin conditions

Kidney Disease, Genetic Predispositions, and More
